The Evening Symphony

Writer: Letters HomeLetters Home

Dearest Sweetie;

Remember that letter that the Right Reverend Alvin scribed to large fellow? He has just came to the conclusion that the same letter will suffice for one to his gal in Minnesota. This polack gal is really warm for his form, but he’s not so eager. In fact he doesn’t write back so often.

I like you tonight Sweetie. Last eve I ventured toward the cinema intending to stand and watch a while, but my mind was changed and speedily. Some big buck said, “Hey, yo caint stand there.” Natcherly I couldn’t, really stupid of me in the first place. You see, it was the only spot one can stand in and see the stage, so of course you can’t stand there. After my brief chat with the dusky character, I eased off down the road. The night wasn’t very dark, for one could see the clouds and almost all of the stars. Those times hon I’d like to be walking with you. Not talking overly much, just walk and look and listen to the night noises. Since this chap was a wee boy, I’ve always desired to walk in the country after dark. There isn’t much to it, except in the summer you smell the cool freshness that the evening brings and maybe if the season is right, the sweet scent of clover. Everything seems nicer then, a bat or an owl occasionally fly by, there are always toads out hoping around, and crickets and frogs to furnish the evening symphony. It may sound as if I’ve done this often, but I honestly

haven’t walked along the country paths since about 1930. A grandad once had a farm in Nebraska and I spent many a happy summer there. Even had an old horse to ride. She wasn’t the speedy type, but neither was I, so we both got on quite well. Often wondered if she was perturbed at having to carry some kid around after working hours. Probably not, the unions on horses were practically non-existent then.

Just read where the unions insure a month’s work for every month in the service after Aug. 1940. Postive we won’t starve to death, why with your beauty and brains plus my back, were in.

Love Always
